One criticism is that I introduce interesting topics, but don’t develop them enough to be understood by the non-specialist. Guilty. This comes from years of writing web pages, where the average visit is just a few seconds. In this blog, I am trying to make the de Broglie wave more intelligible. It is the basis of both physics and (by my theories) psionics. OBE people see ordinary (and extraordinary) objects via the de Broglie wave. The de Broglie wave is what intimately connects mind and body. It accounts for Kirlian photography and dermo-optic vision (the ability of some blind people to see with their fingers). It was quite a sensation in the Soviet Union about 1970. See Ostrander and Schroeder, Psychic Discoveries Behind the Iron Curtain.
There are two forms of perception and control native to the mind, and usually shut down when in-the-body. These are the apparition power, and the de Broglie power. They come on and operate automatically when the mind is out-of-body.
A few preliminary comments about the physics of the de Broglie wave:
I take it as a basic postulate of nature that anything that is logically impossible is also physically impossible. Kurt Goedel proved several important theorems about logical systems, including this theorem: if there is a logical impossibility buried in a system, anything can be proven from it, such as 1= 2, or day = night. All of physics after Einstein contains logical impossibilities, such as wave-particle duality, singularity, and reductio ad absurdem. For instance, if there are virtual particles, the vacuum has infinite energy density. A mathematician would conclude: therefore, there are no virtual particles and no ZPE. But no, that is not what happened. Having swallowed several other logical impossibilities, they swallowed this one too.
A mathematician or logician would have to conclude that all of physics after 1927 is false, even though it contains some correct ideas. For instance, de Broglie waves certainly exist, and contain no logical impossibility. Now let us go back to 1923 and see if we can understand de Broglie waves.
The waves discovered by Prince Louis de Broglie in 1923 remind me of special relativity in that the equations are simple, but the ideas are so strange that it takes a long time to get used to them, a long time to absorb them as a true picture of reality.
Prince Louis de Broglie’s Ph. D. was in History, and he went on to a distinguished career in the French Civil Service. That might be why he has been largely ignored by the professionals, though I would put him among the top 6 physicists of the 20th Century: Planck, Einstein, de Broglie, Dirac, Born and Gamow. Two simple equations and one interpretation define the de Broglie wave.
[1]Momentum P = h/L the wavelength of the de Broglie wave. I.e, P is momentum, and L is wavelength. There is one de Broglie wave associated with each object. A complex object, like a 60 carbon atom Bucky ball, has just one de Broglie wave associated with it, and when sent through the 2 slit interferometer, will display wave-like behavior, just like a photon or an electron.
[2]The Wave Velocity W = C^2/v where v is the velocity of the particle. That is, W is wave velocity, and v is the ordinary velocity of the associated particle. Wave velocity is like the velocity of sound, which is 1100 ft. per sec. The wave velocity W is the fastest thing known. The odd thing is that the lower the velocity of the particle, the faster the de Broglie wave velocity W, which can never travel slower than C, the speed of light. That only happens if the associated particle is a photon, traveling exactly C, the speed of light. C is the speed of light, 3*10^10 cm/sec, a very fast velocity. (This is accurate to 4 significant digits.) C^2 is unimaginably faster, capable of crossing the known universe in a few weeks. h is Planck’s constant, 6.6*10^(-27)erg-sec, a very tiny number, because of the negative sign on the power of 27.
[3]The meaning of these equations was discovered by Max Born. They define an information wave, carrying no energy or momentum. They determine what paths are possible for the associated particle, and the probability of each.
The de Broglie waves can only be applied to something with momentum, and that includes photons and excludes the vacuum. The vacuum has no momentum. Thus, the classic derivation of virtual particles is bogus. There is no ZPE (Zero Point Energy), nor any virtual particles, even though all the theories in physics after about 1950 are based on virtual particles.
There are many examples of quantum weirdness, because we can prove anything with it. We can prove that an electron is smeared out among all the paths it can take, and the “collapse of the wave-function” only takes place when someone observes it. However, in the common sense version of physics, the quantum equation applies to the apparatus, and is the same whether there is an observer present or not.
Physicists cannot advance until they go back and root out all the logical impossibilities from quantum mechanics. Nor would that be difficult. Just use the de Broglie wave.
If we solve problems in quantum theory just using de Broglie waves, we never run into any paradox, such as the wave-particle paradox. A particle is a particle and its sometimes wave-like behavior is entirely due to the de Broglie wave.
Virtual particles are not required to define or understand a force. Forces are due to force fields. General Relativity captures this idea, making space-time the force field. The Earth stays in its orbit around the Sun because of the force field of curved space-time. Similarly, there is a force field that causes the Electro-Magnetic force, and one can sometimes make the flux lines of this force visible with a sheet of paper and some iron filings. It is only an abrupt change in the gravitational or EM force that produces quantum particles, such as photons and gravitons. Something similar must also be true of the strong and weak forces of nuclei.
It was Schroedinger who substituted de Broglie’s formulas into the classic partial differential equation for a wave function, written with the Greek letter for Psi. This Psi has nothing to do with the Psi of psychical research, and is an unfortunate duplication. What does the function we solve for in Schroedinger’s equation mean? No one knows, or perhaps one should say “nothing.” There are ways of messing with the psi function that produces the possible paths and their probabilities. After this was discovered, the de Broglie wave was more or less ignored, or considered a mathematical fiction.
The de Broglie wave works perfectly for the mind-brain interaction. We know from Prof. Ian Stevenson’s lifelong studies of reincarnational evidence that reincarnation exists. Thus, the spirit is not the activity of the brain, and is not even made of ordinary matter. It must be like the dark matter of the astronomers. BTW, the real existence of dark matter has recently been buttressed by studies of the collision of two galactic clusters.
Surgeons can open up the skull and mess around with a living brain on a conscious patient. The first surgeons who did that thought they might find the soul. No such luck. So, for the conventional scientists, that was a blow to a belief in the spirit.
Almost all of our interactions with the physical universe make use of the Electro-Magnetic (EM) force. Dark matter has no interations via the EM force, and that is why it is invisible and intangible and can effortlessly move through “solid” objects. However, everything in nature, including dark matter, interacts via the de Broglie wave, although scientists have not yet built detectors of de Broglie radiation, unless we count Kirlian photography. We know from NDEs and OBEs that the out-of-body spirit does see the de Broglie vibrations of things, and thus, can see both physical and psionic matter (psionic = spiritual). Since the de Broglie power can both send and receive de Broglie waves, it can detect changes in the brain, down to the sub-atomic level, and can also make changes on that level. This is done at a deep level of the sub-conscious, by a part of the spirit-mind G.N.M. Tyrrell called the “stage-manager.” I sometimes think the conscious spirit is only the tip of the iceberg. On this theory, the brain does not create consciousness, nor perception. It is like a pre-processor that produces characteristic patterns of synchronized firing of neurons in certain columns of neurons in the cortex. The stage-manager recognizes this and organizes it into perception. Once in a great while, for a few people, the stage-manager receives an apparitional signal of great importance, and integrates that into what we call an apparition. On this sub-conscious level, all the sentient beings in the same place, interacting, will also interact to create a percept that is consistent for all the sentient beings present, including the family pets. BTW, G.N.M Tyrrell is one of the handful of great Psi researchers, and his little book Apparitions (1940, but frequently reprinted) is one of the great classics of the field. Get a copy! His interest was in apparitions, and I think he tells us everthing we know about the subject. But along the way, he vastly expands our understanding of the mind-spirit. You will learn more from this little book about the mind than from all the books ever written about psychology. Or parapsychology.
