Since the Enlightenment, most Western intellectuals have been opposed to the idea of a practice and social structure of religion. Even today, many of the spiritually enlightened are anti-religion.
The reason is that the arts and rites of existing religion the world over have become boring, symbolically impotent, and without any realistic function. Whatever their other shortcomings, the Satanists and the witches are religious groups with potent and purposive arts and rites.
The mythic potency of arts and practices can be studied empirically/theoretically and made to serve the purpose of evolution along the Great Way.
People who care about the regeneration of civilization must be concerned with the regeneration of religion as an institution and public practice. We all stagnate unless we work for everyone's evolution and not just our own.
